Director Biographies







David Bell - CEO
David started his career as an engineering officer in the British Merchant Navy, where he gained a broad understanding of a wide range of marine, mechanical and electrical control systems. He supplemented this knowledge with an honours degree in electronic engineering before working in a management role in the design and production of thick-film hybrid circuits. In 1989, David moved into the automotive industry where he worked for a major vehicle manufacturer, with responsibility for the design and development of all electrical and security systems on a number of new models. After setting up SBD in 1995 he has been closely involved in setting strategic direction for a number of leading vehicle manufacturers to help them understand the ITS, telematics, and security landscape in Europe.

David McClure - ITS and Telematics Director
David graduated from Imperial College, London with a degree in Electrical Engineering and has spent his career working in the design and development of telematics, navigation and entertainment systems for the automotive industry. After gaining valuable experience and insight into the Japanese and European approaches to vehicle development with Ford and Nissan, David moved into the consulting field with SBD in 1995. Since then he has led the growth of SBD’s Telematics & ITS Department since its inception, over-seeing its expansion out of Europe to include China, Brazil, Russia and North America. David is widely regarded as one of the industry's most authoritative experts on all aspects of telematics and ITS.



Gareth Jones - Security and Cost of Ownership Director

With over 25 years experience of working vehicle design for a number of leading vehicle manufacturers, Gareth is an expert in vehicle development cycles and processes specialising in global vehicle security, low speed impact, and cost of ownership.  He is responsible for many of the world's leading OEM cost of ownership strategies and manages all aspects of SBD's Security and Cost of Ownership division.
