Theft statistics show that car theft in North America has been reducing over recent years although it is still relatively high compared to other Western countries. In fact, 1 car is stolen every 33 seconds in the USA which equates to nearly 1 million cars a year!
According to research released by SBD, the overall reduction in vehicle theft is mainly due to the increased level of immobiliser fitment to new cars since the late 1990s. However, SBD predicts that vehicle theft will increase in the USA in part due to recent legislative changes that allow deletion of the steering lock when an electronic immobiliser is fitted, as well as mandatory openness of key code information. There is also the impact of social changes like recession, unemployment and the expansion of global organised crime.
Further statistics released by Autoinsurance.org also shows a general lack of vigilance amongst drivers about how to appropriately secure their cars.
For example, 15% of stolen cars had the keys in the ignition and 40% of drivers leave valuables on display in their vehicles. Also, the most popular location for a vehicle to be stolen is in the owner’s garage or driveway.
