Technology and Event Reviews

SBD ITS and Telematics Technical Analyst, Abhishek Visveswaran, gives his photographic highlights from Press Day at the Geneva Motor Show 2009.

The key trends from the 2009 Geneva Motor Show were the continued growth of low-cost embedded navigation systems and the migration of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems to mass market models.

Innovative SD card-based navigation systems at the event included the Renault Carminat TomTom developed in cooperation with the Portable Navigation Device (PND) supplier, VW’s RNS 310, Nissan Connect and Mazda’s new compact navigation system. The new RNS 310 will be available in Seat, Skoda and VW models. The system uses both a touchscreen and a rotary controller on the head unit with quick access buttons.

Mercedes displayed its Universal Multi-media Interface (UMI) that includes Bluetooth audio streaming and navigation based on maps loaded via USB. The new Mercedes E-Class included a host of ADAS applications including Attention Assist driver monitoring, lane keeping and departure warning, night vision and Traffic Sign Recognition similar to the system launched on the Opel Insignia last year. ADAS systems were also launched in the mass market segment by Peugeot and Mazda. The Peugeot 3008 included a forward-looking Distance Alert warning system while the Mazda 3 included a Rear Vehicle Monitoring system that provides blind spot support.

SBD has released a photo-rich report on the navigation, ADAS, telematics and entertainment systems at the Geneva Motor Show. For more information contact Juanita on jappleby@sbd.co.uk
