Technology and Event Reviews

The Comfort Access smart key system fitted to the latest BMW 5-series is now fitted with a feature that allows a customer carrying a smart key to open the rear luggage hatch by simply waving their foot. The system, which is being previewed at the Paris Motor Show next week, uses two sensor strips placed on different planes in the rear bumper. The placement of the sensors makes it possible to identify the customer’s foot movement without any risk of confusing it, for example, with a ball rolling under the car.

The opening mechanism can only be activated if the control unit also identifies the car key, which the customer must be carrying with them. It means that if customers want to load numerous – or particularly large – items of luggage, they no longer need to put these items down on the ground and free up a hand before opening the tailgate. This is similar to the Mercedes Sprinter van system launched in 2008 that allows the sliding side door to operate automatically for the benefit of delivery drivers.

The “hands-free tailgate opener” will be available for the new BMW 5 Series Touring and new BMW 5 Series Saloon from autumn 2011 as part of the BMW ConnectedDrive Comfort Access option.

According to SBD’s research on the European market for smart key systems, overall smart key availability in Europe has more than tripled since 2003, and many more manufacturers such as Chrysler, Hyundai, Kia, Saab and Skoda are expecting to introduce their first systems within the next two years.

Features like that being introduced on BMW’s smart key system give the consumer that all important high-technology image and “wow factor” which have always been important selling points for these vehicle systems.

To date, smart key technology has appealed mainly to innovators and early adopters. Prices have reduced over recent years and although vehicle manufacturers are using clever ways of combining smart key systems with other optional features, the industry is struggling to generate a strong customer pull.
