The Car2Car Communication Consortium (C2C-CC) of European carmakers is preparing to launch cooperative V2X systems on the marketplace from 2015. “The vehicle manufacturers are planning to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) committing themselves to deployment starting in 2015,” explained Soren Hess, the general manager of the C2C-CC during its annual Forum in Germany attended by SBD.

The C2C Consortium is planning to focus its efforts on developing both vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure advanced safety and driver information services and systems. To ensure that roadside infrastructure is ready for the availability of in-car systems the C2C-CC is attempting to establish cooperative agreements with public and private road operators across Europe.

The C2C-CC initiative is led by the German automotive industry through BMW, Daimler, Opel and Volkswagen. Ford is expected to join the consortium in 2012 and other members include Honda, PSA and Renault and Volvo. As part of the build up to the launch of initial systems and services in 2015, the C2C-CC is preparing a demonstration event in Vienna as part of the ITS World Congress in October 2012. This demonstration will include the operation of V2X services on both open public roads and a closed test track. It is supported by ASFINAG, the Austrian national tolled motorway operator, as part of the Testfeld Telematik project.

Discussions at the C2C-CC Forum focused on the initial use cases for V2X technologies, telecommunications standards and the technology needed to provide reliable and secure communications both between vehicles and between cars and the roadside infrastructure. Unresolved issues discussed at the meeting include legal and insurance questions, certification and enforcement of standards, antenna performance and potential interference with electronic toll collection systems.
