Vehicle Security Industry Insight

The 64th Frankfurt motor show takes place from the 15th to the 25th of September 2011. Frankfurt is one of the largest passenger vehicle exhibitions in the world and SBD will be in attendance on the press days on the 13th and 14th to report on all the latest security technology that the automotive industry has to offer.

Whilst the majority of media attention may be on Audi’s €10 million show-stand, or the launch of the BMW i3 and i8 as part of the new BMW sub-brand, for SBD’s Secure Car team it’s a chance to analyse the latest security developments and determine what thieves could target next.We will be looking at the growing popularity of smart key systems in Europe – a trend SBD have been reporting on for the last few years.  New smart start and smart entry systems are becoming available across an increasing number of manufacturer model ranges as European customers begin to recognise the obvious improvements in convenience that the systems can bring.

We will also be focussing on the latest developments in key fob design and technology, and it is the rise of smartphones that SBD expect to take centre stage.  Whether they act as an interface between the driver and the keyfob, or directly control vehicle functions through telematics, the popularity and expansion of features in smartphones has the potential to bring onboard information and functions out of the car and into the hands of the driver.

As part of this move to a more ‘connected world’ inside or outside the vehicle and the increasing integration of remote security and convenience functions within remote applications may please the customers, but SBD will be on hand to take a look at the new threats that thieves could bring with specific, electronic hacking attacks to these new systems. High-specification features like these are a must for any concept vehicle, so SBD expect to see manufacturers and suppliers once again push the boundaries of automotive technology in front of the spotlight of Europe’s biggest motor show.
