Technology and Event Reviews

Intermap has completed its 3D map coverage for Western Europe. The Munich-based firm is promoting its database for use in Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and intelligent vehicle drivetrain applications.

The Intermap 3D Roads product covers 6.2 million km of roads with a claimed height accuracy of less than 1 metre. The 3D map was produced by combining data from aircraft fitted with radar sensors and accurate height information from the Intermap NextMap database of modelled elevations.

ADAS can use the precise 3D road geometry information so the vehicle control systems can be prepared for upcoming gradient changes and turns. Potential ADAS functions for the map include curve speed warning, brake preparation, predictive front lighting and overtaking assistance.

Intermap says vehicle manufacturers are also interested in their 3D map for environmental applications. Pre-warning of upcoming hills can facilitate the vehicle selecting the most efficient gear. In addition, knowledge of gradients will allow navigation systems to select a route that will produce least emissions.

Pre-warning of slopes is particularly important for heavy goods vehicles where fuel savings can be significant. For electric vehicles, knowledge of road gradients will allow navigation systems to accurately predict the vehicle’s range.

The new Intermap 3D map database covers Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland and the UK.
